Celebrate People's History
At the end of this unit, you will create a poster in Photoshop that mimics the aesthetic of a silkscreen, wood block, or photocopy print. The poster will be about a contemporary activist, activist collective, or act of civil disobedience, as inspired by the Justseeds Celebrate People's History poster project.
Research: Can I name a contemporary activist, activist collective, or act of civil disobedience?
You will write a 7 to 10 sentence summary of the person, group, or act of civil disobedience you chose to research. Be sure to include the following information, if relevant:

Using Photoshop to recreate the printmaking aesthetics of silkscreen printing, block printing, and photocopying.
In our class KWL chart, we listed what we already know about printmaking, under the "K" column. We now need to do a little research to answer the question (for the "W" column): How can we use Photoshop to recreate the aesthetic qualities of silkscreen, wood or lino block, and photocopy printmaking? Before we can answer that question, we need to identify what the aesthetic qualities of each of those types of printing are.
Click on the links below, and examine the artworks closely. Make a Venn Diagram that compares and contrasts the characteristics of each style of printmaking. You can work with a partner.

This is an example of a silkscreen print by Andy Warhol. You can use the plus and minus keys on your keyboard to zoom in and out of the picture. You can (and should) search "silkscreen" on the MOMA site and look closely at other examples brought up by the search.
This is an example of a linoleum block print by Pablo Picasso. Here is another by Elizabeth Catlett. Again, you can zoom in to the picture with the +/- keys. You might also want to take a look at these block prints of Marilyn Monroe, done by a Japanese doctor that seems to be a bit obsessed with the late actress. Last, do a google search for "photocopy posters" (without the quotation marks). You should get a lot of images of band posters in the search results. |
Celebrate People's History:
You are going to examine artworks from the poster series by Justseeds, called "Celebrate People's History." This poster series is the inspiration for this project.
Click on the link below for a Google docs sheet, which will ask you to critique one of the posters in the series.

You will need to be signed into your CPS email first. To be able to type in the doc, you will need to go to File -> Make a Copy
Rename the file "YourName CPH".

Creating the look of block prints in Photoshop:
We are going to use Photoshop to try and recreate the visual characteristics of block printing.
Click on the Will Ferrell image, and then Control + click to "Copy Image"
In Photoshop, open a new document. Don't change anything but the resolution, which you should change to 300 Pixels/Inch.
Next, copy and paste the map picture into the document with Will Ferrell. Then copy and paste the image with four colors into the same document as the map and Ferrell.
Rearrange the layers so Will is on top. Cut out the background of the Will Ferrell image with a selection tool of your choosing.

Creating a Silkscreen effect in Photoshop:
Below is a tutorial on how to create a silkscreen effect using Photoshop. This tutorial is a little more involved, so we will be going through the steps together as a class. We will be using the Gaga picture for the demo.

Creating a Photocopy effect in Photoshop:
To start the demo, we took screenshots of letters (command+control+shift+4) from magazine ads found online to write the word "hello", then combined the head of our favorite animal with the body of our favorite celebrity.

Project Requirements and Benchmarks (5 pts):
Directions:
You are creating a poster in the style of the Justseeds "Celebrate People's History" poster series. Your poster will be about a contemporary activist, activist collective, or act of civil disobedience, as inspired by the Justseeds Celebrate People's History poster project.

Requirements (Due 3/22):
Your project must:
TIP:
Because you are using three or more images, make a single layer from those three images by hiding all other layers, go to select->all, then edit->copy merged, and then edit->paste. This will be helpful if you choose to do the photocopy or the silkscreen effect. It is not necessary for the block print effect.
Your project must:
- Be a US Paper size document (landscape or portrait OK)
- Include a title (click here for the presentation we viewed on title design. Also, think about what we learned with the typography design project)
- You will likely have to use images from the internet, combine at least three images to create a unique image (see TIP below).
- Include 7 to 10 sentences that explain what your poster is about (these come from your activist research worksheet)
- Present all text so that it is legible
- Place text thoughtfully in the composition (think of your text as part of the design-try using the pen tool to create a uniquely shaped text box)
- Use ONE of the three printmaking effects we learned (silkscreen, block print, OR photocopy - do not combine effects)
- Use only 3 to 5 different colors in your composition (or only 1 color plus black if you are doing the photocopy effect) (you can use tints and shades of the colors chosen... ex: red, pink and maroon= one color, because they are all variations of red)
- Black and white count as colors for this project
