Performance Art
The end goal of this unit is to create a work of art that involves video in some manner. You will eventually be using the cameras to take videos and then learning how to use iMovie to edit the footage. One way you can complete the art project mentioned above is to use video to document a performance piece you create.
To begin, we are going to first look at Performance Art. The word performance might make you think about dancers or musicians; this is performative art, not Performance Art. What is the difference? You will work in partners to answer this question, and present your research to the class in the form of a powerpoint. Each pair will get an important aspect of Performance Art, whether it's a specific Performance artist or a related art movement, to do their research on. You can select from the list below: no two groups can do the same artist or period. |
Working in Pairs:
There will probably be a lot that you are unfamiliar with or don't understand as you read about the artists and movements covered in this unit. That is why I want you to work as a team! Each group member should read all of the materials found, if they are relevant to what you are researching. For example, if one member finds an article useful, the other member should read it, too.
Your task, as a pair, is to decide which of the information is most important to share, and how to word it in a student-friendly way.
You will each be responsible for:

You will each be responsible for:
- finding sources,
- looking up and defining vocabulary words, and
- creating and presenting the research in the form of a five minute slideshow presentation.
Presentation Requirements:
You and your partner will be assigned one of the artists or related movements below.
Please make note of what you need to address in your 5 minute slideshow presentation.

Your Performance Piece
You will create a piece of performance art, using video to document the performance. We will use our cameras to shoot the video, and iMovie to edit the footage. Each person must create his/her own performance, but you can use other people in the performance with their permission. You will likely need someone to hold the camera, but we may have tripods available for use.
You have two days to plan, though you can begin sooner if your're ready. You must OK your idea with me before beginning. You should have your footage ready to edit by Tuesday, 1/16/18, which means you need to have performed and video taped by the end of the day Friday. You are welcome to perform and document at home, but you still need to follow the rules, and you must be able to get the footage without having to bring your camera to class. You must also use class time productively. The final video of the performance piece is due 1/19.
