SOI:
Identity is represented in the genre of still lifes through personal expression.
Inquiry Q's:
(F)What is a still life? What is a self portrait?
(C)How can I express my identity through symbolism? What happens when I combine the genres of still life and self portraiture?
(D)Does a self portrait have to look like the artist to be considered a self portrait, or do other forms of representation count?

Still life + Self Portraits + Photoshop=
Digital Still Life Self Portraits! You will be using Photoshop, plus images from the internet, to create a self-portrait-themed still life. How? You will be finding objects that symbolize aspects of your identity, and arranging them on a table, in a style reminiscent of a still life painting. Here is the presentation we viewed in class. Below are the images we will use for the practice still life: |
You can include objects that are things you like to do, such as video game consoles and athletic equipment, where the symbolism is direct. Also try to challenge yourself, where you have to get creative on how you can represent an aspect of yourself symbolically. For example, maybe a BuildOn button can represent all the community service you do, if engaging in community service is a big part of who you are.

Benchmarks and Rubric (10 pts)
Bii. demonstrates [significant (1/1), adequate (1/1), limited (0/1)] application of eraser tool with proper brush and opacity settings to create the look of a transparent object (flower and vase).
Bii. demonstrates [significant (1/1), adequate (1/1), limited (0/1)] application of selection tools and distort(transform) tools to create the look of draped fabric (table cloth). Bii. demonstrates [significant (1/1), adequate (1/1), limited (0/1)] application of layer opacity and selection tools create the look of an object inside another object (yarn and basket). Bii. demonstrates [significant (1/1), adequate (1/1), limited (0/1)] application of selection tools and perspective transform tool to create the look of a picture in a frame (or something similar). Bii. demonstrates [significant (1/1), adequate (1/1), limited (0/1)] application of selection tool modifications, such as “similar” and tolerance adjustments, to create clean image cuts(no visible background remnants). Bi. demonstrates [significant (1/1), adequate (1/1), limited (0/1)] acquisition and development of selection tools, transform tools, and layer order to place objects in proper perspective, relative scale, and relative positioning (looks believable). Aiii. demonstrates [significant (1/1), adequate (1/1), limited (0/1)] use of acquired knowledge of still lifes to purposefully inform artistic decisions in the process of composing your project so that is reminiscent of a still life. Ci. develops an [significant (1/1), adequate (1/1), limited (0/1)] artistic intention that is a feasible, clear, imaginative and/or coherent, fully developed composition (developed background, 10 objects on table, project looks finished). Di. constructs [significant (1/1), adequate (1/1), limited (0/1)] meaning through symbolic use of objects to represent identity and transfers learning from self portraiture to still lifes (use of objects symbolically- reflection q’s). Ai. demonstrates [significant (1/1), adequate (1/1), limited (0/1)] knowledge and understanding of still lifes and self portraits, including use of subject-specific terminology such as symbolism and representation(reflection q’s). |
You used the eraser tool with the transparency lowered, the layers are in the proper order, and you erased cleanly and carefully.
You used a selection tool in combination with Transform->Distort, the corners of the fabric align, and the edges of the fabric are parallel to the edges of the table. You used the layer opacity and a selection tool to give the illusion of one object inside another, carefully following the contour of the container when drawing the selection. You used a selection tool and Transform-> Perspective, to create a framed picture in proper relative perspective- it looks like its on the wall or propped up on a table. You used Select-> Similar and/or changed the Magic Wand tool tolerance as needed, chose the proper selection tool for the task, and have clean cuts with no visible image remnants. You used all known tools in such a way that your objects are in scale with each other, in a perspective consistent with each other and are arranged in a way that looks "real." Your finished composition (the way you arranged elements in your document) looks like a still life: there are objects are varying sizes and heights, overlapping one another. The focus of the project is the table and objects on it. The project met all the requirement: symbolic objects, 10 objects on the table, etc. There are no large, awkward, empty spaces. The project looks finished. (Di) You were able to create a still life arrangement that represented aspects of your identity through symbols. Your use of symbols went beyond surface at least once; you used objects beyond what you considered likes and dislikes. For example: a cooking pot might symbolize that your a regular volunteer at a soup kitchen. (Ai) You should be able to identify and describe the symbols used if your project, as well as define "still life," and "self portrait" in your own words. Both of these benchmarks will be assessed through reflection questions posted on weebly. |
